Research Participation Terms

    Last updated: March 2026

    What "Research Tier" Means

The Research Tier is a completely opt-in program where you choose to share anonymized sleep data to advance sleep science. Participation is voluntary and can be revoked at any time.

    What Data Is Shared

When you opt in, the following anonymized sensor readings are shared:

    • Movement patterns and intensity
    • Sleep position classifications
    • Temperature trends
    • Sound event classifications (snoring, coughing, etc.)
    • Room environment data (CO2, humidity, light, noise levels)

    What Is NOT Shared

    • Personal identifying information (PII) -- your name, email, address
    • Audio clips -- never shared, even if you enable local recording or remote backup
    • Video -- never shared, even if you enable local or remote recording via a third party camera
    • Account information -- login credentials, payment details

    How Data Is Anonymized

All shared data is indexed by device ID only. The mapping table between your identity and your device ID is never shared with researchers. If you leave the research program, the mapping can be deleted, permanently orphaning your contributed data into the anonymous pool.

    How Data Is Used

    • Algorithm training -- improving sleep position detection, movement classification, and pattern recognition
    • Clinical validation -- comparing our algorithms against polysomnography and wearable reference devices
    • Academic research -- collaborations with university and hospital research teams
    • FDA submission support -- building the evidence base for future regulatory clearances

    Revoking Consent

You can revoke your consent at any time by toggling off research participation in your settings. Data sharing stops immediately.

Previously shared data remains in anonymized aggregate datasets. Because the data has been de-identified, it cannot be un-contributed once it enters the anonymous pool. This is by design -- it protects your privacy even from us.

    Benefits of Participation

    • 30-day Night Review history (vs. 7-day standard)
    • Research annotations -- see what patterns researchers find interesting in anonymized aggregate data
    • Quarterly impact report -- how your data contributed to research
    • Early access to features developed from research insights
    • Research Contributor badge in the Founder's Circle community, visible on every post

    Your Data Is Never Sold

Komori Care does not sell your individual data. Your personal sleep data belongs to you. It is never sold to data brokers, advertisers, or any third party. Anonymized research data is shared with approved research partners solely for scientific and clinical purposes.

    Partnerships & Integrations

Komori Care may establish commercial partnerships and integrations with third-party health platforms, including companies in related markets (e.g., seizure tracking services, sleep clinics, health monitoring platforms). These partnerships are Komori's business relationships and may involve:

    • Platform integrations -- Komori may build, sell, or license integrations that allow data to flow between Komori and partner platforms.
    • Aggregate insights -- Anonymized, aggregate findings (e.g., population-level sleep position trends) may be shared with partners. No individual user data is included.
    • Your data, your choice -- If a partner integration involves sharing YOUR personal data with a third-party service, you must explicitly enable it in your settings. No personal data flows to any partner without your active consent.

In short: Komori controls its business partnerships. You control your data. These are separate decisions.

    Research Results & Publication

Research partners who receive Komori data agree to the following:

    • Citation required -- Komori Care must be acknowledged as the data source in all publications, presentations, and reports that use Komori data.
    • Copy of results -- Research partners will provide Komori Care with a copy of all findings, publications, and reports that use Komori data. These do not need to be made public — partners control if and when they publish.
    • Ownership -- Research partners retain full ownership of their analysis, conclusions, and intellectual property. Their work is theirs.
    • Product improvement -- Komori Care may use published research findings and insights derived from shared data to improve its products, algorithms, and services.
    • No exclusivity -- Data sharing does not grant exclusive rights. Komori Care may share the same anonymized dataset with multiple research partners.
    • Revocation -- Komori Care may revoke data access if a research partner fails to comply with these terms, including the citation and results-sharing obligations.

    IRB Compliance

When Komori Care participates in formal academic research, studies will be submitted for Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval as required by the research institution. You will be notified separately if your data is included in an IRB-reviewed study and may be asked for additional consent specific to that study.
